Clarity, when do I see it?
What is Clarity?
When we speak of clarity, you might be familiar with terms like flaws, perfection,
or imperfection. As these are mostly interchangeable, we like to use clarity.
When selling diamonds, the word flaw has a negative impact. The word perfection
gives off the wrong vibe as well. Making the stone seem as though it could be
perfect. It can't! Imperfection is totally acceptable, but still offers a taste
of negativity. Each seller of diamonds will have his or her own preference when
describing clarity issues. For the sake of discussion, I will be using all as
well.
There are twelve different types of flaws in a diamond. These flaws fall into
one of two categories. The first is a black flaw. This is simply carbon that
did not crystallize into diamond. The second group is a white flaw which is the
most common and the hardest to detect. These could be a feather, cleavage, grain
lines, pinpoint, cloud, natural, included crystal, or twinning lines. Some of
these will impact value and beauty more than others. Before we get to that lets
learn about the grading system for clarity.
