Where do Diamonds Come From?


Diamonds formed millions of years ago at a depth of almost 220 miles below the surface of the earth. The diamonds were brought to the surface by a volcanic eruption. The diamonds were thrown from the volcanic pipe and landed on the sides of the mountain. For centuries these diamonds were washed down the mountains by seasonal rains. Eventually they came to rest in the rivers. The above drawing shows the volcano and the erosion of earth over time. The volcanic shafts that brought the diamonds to the surface lay hidden for thousands of years. It is important to understand that most diamonds found for thousands of years were found in alluvial deposits not in volcanic pipes.
